It is no longer news that Enugu Rangers have ended their 32 year wait to be the NPFL champions or Imama Amakapbabio being credited by football analysts as the mastermind behind Rangers success and rightly so because he did that by introducing a swashbuckling display of football which was a delight to watch and easy on the eye.
But it certainly didn't happen overnight for the 46 year old tactician who was an assistant coach in Enyimba and Enugu Rangers, he was finally given the reins at the Flying Antelopes following the departure of Kelechi Emetole.
Though he replaced Kelechi Emeteole on a temporary basis but the Rangers management decided to keep him which eventually turned out to be a master stroke as he won the title.
His triumph in the NPFL can bring about a paradigm shift in coaching in Nigeria as football analysts in Nigeria have complained of the same old coaches who are being recycled in Nigeria and considering the fact that most of this older coaches don't go on refresher training course they are still stuck with the same old tactics which they started out as coaches as they have failed to evolve and most times they are found wanting whenever it comes to tactics especially on the continent but a coach like Imama brings a new breath of fresh air as his philosophy is something that has easily been embodied by his players and a style that is akin to the Barcelona tiki-taka football.
Imama's triumph is not only a triumph for him but for younger coaches who are in desperate need for inspiration in their coaching career coaches like Fidelis Illechukwu and Kennedy Boboye (both former coaches at MFM FC and Abia Warriors) etc can take solace from the fact that one of their own is winning which could inspire them to aim for more and also kind of slowly ease out the older coaches.
For Imama the sky is just the starting point for him as there are reports that Rangers are trying to give him a three year contract which will be good as continuity is necessary if they want to succeed on the continent as who knows he can just go all the way to win the Caf Champions League (CAFCL) title.
