Flying Eagles Captain-Abdul Jelel Ajagun |
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles expressed confidence of a good outing at the 2013 U20 World Cup when they became the first team in Group B to arrive in Kayseri, Turkey, on Monday evening.
“We are delighted to be in Kayseri and we hope to do our country proud at this tournament,” declared skipper Abduljaleel Ajagun.
“We have worked hard and we all know we have to deliver and we will do so.”
The team flew in from Munich, Germany, to Istanbul and from there connected a local flight to Kayseri, where they will play two group games before they head back to Istanbul for their final group game.
An official from the Nigerian embassy in Turkey as well as the team’s liaison officer Seckin Cakmakoglu received the team on arrival at the Istanbul airport by about 4pm local time.
Turkey is two hours ahead of Nigeria.
The Flying Eagles have since checked into their Hilton Hotel in Kayseri and the entire squad are quartered on the sixth floor of the four star hotel.
Despite the highly publicised coverage of the anti-government protest, there were no visible signs of any trouble in either Istanbul or Kayseri.
The other teams in Group B, namely Portugal, Cuba and South Korea, are also being expected at the same hotel.
Debutants Cuba and South Korea will open the U20 World Cupon Friday afternoon with Nigeria battling Portugal in the second game of the group in a late kick-off also on Friday.
The Flying Eagles are due to train twice on Tuesday – first by 9am local time and then by 4pm in the evening.
