Two early goals inside ten minutes ensured Kogi United eased past Kaduna United with a 2-0 win on match day 22 in the Bet9ja Nigeria National League (NNL) clash in Lokoja on Saturday.
Micheal Bolaji jabbed in the first goal within second minutes of the game when Victor Tale raced down from right flank before his through pass wasn't converted well by Bobby but the forward amended for his mistakes as he laid Bolaji who shoot past Godwin Tale.
Kaduna United almost level the scoreline moments later when Shamsudeen Hashim was found on the run by Sanusi Afeez but Kogi United's keeper Ogundare Detan was on to make a timely safe.
Detan was on hand again to clear the line for Kogi United in the fifth minutes when Kaduna attackers beat offside trap but Musa Henry couldn't pounce.
Kogi United doubled their lead two minutes later when Ibrahim Mustapha stole the ball from Ojo Jeremiah in the middle and raced down into the box before picking his angle well to beat Godwin Tale in goal for the visitors.
The game became a more cagey one as Kaduna United stepped up to the challenge to ward off subsequent attacks from the hosts and were shy of goals at few opportunities they had.
Kogi United's next scoring opportunity came at the dead of half time but Mustapha was selfish as his shot went awry when he had Bolaji at a better positioned.
The second half was more of midfield tussle as Kaduna United tried to break their hosts on the counter but were thwarted at each time of asking by a compact Kogi United's defense.
But there were few opportunities in the second half notably for the hosts but Godwin Tale showed stuffs he's made of with brilliant reflexes to maintain the margin for his side.
Assistant Coach of the Lokoja side, Musa Abubakar who was elated with the victory over a determined Kaduna United noted that Kogi United would build on their performance as they continue to push for promotion to elite league.
"I'm excited and happy with the win, it's very important for us, you would expect us score more after those goals but Kaduna United aren't just a pushover, they are a talented and determined side so it's a bit hard to break them at the back again.
"We are still in good stead for it (promotion to NPFL) we will be taking remaining games as they come with sense of seriousness and total focus with hard work and prayers," he said.
Technical Adviser of Kaduna United, Taiwo Yusuf ascribed fatigue to his side's early slump to concede the goals adding that he would build on the positives and correct the identified mistakes before next game.
Kogi United have accrued 29 points and will next travel to Hadejia to take on Jigawa Golden Stars.
