The 29th edition of the Mock African Cup of Nations football championship has kicked off in Lagos. A total of twenty teams are participating and have been divided into six groups, including Ethiopia, the defending champions of the 2013 edition, and other top teams such as Nigeria, Congo, Ghana, Cameroun, Egypt, Tunisia, Kenya, Mali, Zambia and others. With matches being played at the popular Nigerian Navy playground, Apapa - Ajegunle.
Speaking with journalists, the founder and
secretary general of the longest running grassroots soccer championship in Nigeria, Lawrence Alabrah, promised that this year’s edition would be better and bigger than previous editions in terms of organization and the standard of play.

“You know that this championship is renowned for producing top class players for this country in the past, including the likes of Henry Nwosu, Dipreiye Teibowei, Jumbo Awala, Emmanuel Amuneke, Gabriel Okolosi, Benjamin James,Mathias Enebeli,Paul Imomoh and several others.And were bent on continuing the tradition”, Alabrah enthused.
He went to debunk claims that the championship has been suspended. According to him, the championship only witnessed some financial difficulties as funds stopped coming from Lagos state government who have been supporting the championship in recent times. He however, expressed his gratitude to the state government for the support the championship had enjoyed in the past, while pleading with the government not to stop supporting such grassroots initial.
The matches which started on December 6th, 2014 are expected to end on January 4th 2015.
