The Sky Blue Stars were 3-1 winners over Abia Comets in the rescheduled Week 14 of the Nigeria National League encounter in Ijebu-Ode on Wednesday.
Fears of the game been postponed was the major talking point before the
game as it rained heavily. Eventually the game kicked off after the ball test by the match officials and captains of both teams agreed to go ahead with the encounter.
Adebogun Omotayo opened the scoring as early as the 3rd minute as he converted the first set piece of the game as the Sky Blue Stars showed determination to win the encounter having drawn 3 games at home this season.
Abia Comets rallied round, got some momentum and got the scores on level terms after a beautiful cross from Uche Okoro from the right side was met by approaching Ogu Uzoma who showed great composure to rifle the ball home with his left foot to keep the scores at level terms before the half time break.
Second half proceedings begun and the Sky Blue Stars needed to break down a strong and brave Comets defense who were determined to hold on and hit on the counter attacks and Adebogun Omotayo once again got pass his marker and strike the ball home to give the Stars the lead for the second time.
Awazie Ekene sealed all three points for the Sky Blue Stars in the dying moments of the game with an individual brilliance after picking up the ball in the midfield and got pass two comets players before slotting the ball into the net beating the goalkeeper in his near post.
Olabode Awakan was impressed with the team's performance while indicating the team will go on a 3 days break before resuming proper for the second phase of the league.
"It was a good game, we played well, showed quality and character. Am glad with the way the team played today, we were effective going forward and hopefully we will be a better team by the time we resume for the next round of games.
"The team goes on a 3 days break today, we resume on Monday so I expect everyone to get some rest and be fresh for the next phase of the league which is quite vital and important for everyone in this great club.
