The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) has concluded plans to honour two of Nigeria’s most adorable broadcast journalists of their generation, Messrs Ishola Folorunsho and Ernest Okonkwo, both of blessed memory.
Okonkwo, a creative mind who had a unique style of commentating, giving appropriate qualifying adjectives to each of every persona, be they player, administrator or referee, was a collosus in the broadcast industry when he ran commentaries on the radio for Radio Nigeria in
his days.
He coined nicknames such as ‘Man Mountain’ (Emmanuel Okala), ‘Blockbuster’ (Aloysius Atuegbu), ‘Mathematical’ (Segun Odegbami), ‘Harmattan’ (Uwem Ekarika), ‘Chairman’ (Christian Chukwu), ‘Justice’ (Adokiye Amiesimaka), ‘Slow Poison’ (Idowu Otubusin) et cetera.
Ishola Folorunsho, nicknamed ‘Mr. It’s A Goal’, was another versatile and colourful commentator who also worked for Radio Nigeria.
Governor Fashola, according to organisers of the 2013 Federation Cup grand finale, has concluded plans to name the Media Gallery at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere after the two illustrious persons. Family members of the two late commentators will also be invited to
the grand finale to receive honours on their behalf.
