NNL Clears Air on Match Fixing Clubs Vows to punish Zamfara FC

The Board of Nigeria National league (NNL) has cleared the air on the mix-up that has trailed the news of the scandalous score line involving clubs in Nigeria that has attracted the attention of the national and international media.

The Chairman of NNL, High Chief Emeka Inyama has disassociated the league from the scandal, saying that the clubs involved in the act that has brought football disrepute are not from the National League.

Inyama disclosed that the four clubs are playing their trade in the amateur league and were desperate to gain promotion to the third tier league called the Nigeria Nation-wide League.

According to him, the two leagues are not the same; pointing out the mix-up stems from the fact that many people believe that Nigeria National League and Nationwide League is the same league.

“It’s a pity that many people do not know the difference between the two Leagues. For sake of clarification, the NNL which I am the Chairman was formally known as the Nigeria Professional League while the Nigeria Nationwide League was called Amateur League. Those clubs fighting to enter amateur rank are playing in the non-league just like the four involved in the match-fixing scandal”, he explained.

Inyama who is also the executive board member of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) however said that the NNL is still investigating the alleged circumstances in the case of Zamafara FC which withdrew from the league after the mid-season break. The NNL had received petitions alleging foul play.

He revealed that anybody found culpable will receive adequate sanction, adding that the recommendations of the Committee set up to investigate the action will be implemented to serve as deterrent to other clubs that may repeat the offence.
