Football remains the number one sport in Nigeria but running a successful football club in Nigeria remains a herculean task.
Though government owned clubs aren’t concerned about running a football club in a more professional way because of the way these clubs are structured. They’ve got so much funds to play around with yet they aren’t accountable.
Even in the midst of obvious challenges that has compelled some private owned clubs out of different football leagues in Nigeria some individuals are not ready to give up. “Change they say is constant” In recent times, we’ve seen some private owned clubs who have chosen to do things right, clubs like COD United of Lagos, DSS FC of Kaduna, ABS FC of Ilorin, etc.
Bako FC of Lokoja, Kogi State is one of such clubs who are ready to make positive impact in Nigerian football. The club formerly known as “Ball Boys FC” will feature in the state league where they intend to gain promotion to the Nigeria Nationwide League (NNWL) a third level league in Nigeria.
According to the chairman of the club, Moses Bako “Bako FC is here to help engage the youths who despite their talents roam about the street idle”.
A couple of private club owned clubs have pulled out of the league or disbanded due to financial reasons but Moses Bako said this project isn’t about making money,we would have loved to secure a space in the NPL,NNL or NNWL but considering our current status it’s better we start from where our budget can accommodate.
Bako continued, “we shall play our home matches at the Lokoja township stadium and plans are on as we speak to set up a proper supporters club who will also help the club grow.
Corruption has been a setback in Nigerian football little wonder two clubs scored 179 goals recently in a playoff match in the NNWL, officiating hasn’t been encouraging as well but this isn’t enough reason to scare Moses Bako from sponsoring the club to help engage the youths.
“It’s better we do things right if we intend to touch lives positively in our society. Yes, we know this project involves heavy financial commitment but that doesn’t mean we should consider going through the back door,” Moses Bako concluded

good one Bako FC! we need more private clubs that will do things right. it might be hard at the beginning but when we keep to it, it will better our football here in Nigeria. Kudos!

Bolowotan & COD are my favourite clubs when it comes to private clubs in Nigeria because they do things right. I hope you guys will do better. with these kind of clubs coming up, Nigeria will have hope.
well am not trying to be negative but the truth is that unless you have a big church or a private owned Organization backing you up financially, you will not make it. financing a private club in Nigeria by oneself is a crazy task......i remember reading about Bolowotan issues, the club is one of the best in Nigeria, they had good publicity, they were everywhere on the social media, they use the social media to register themselves on our minds, u see fans competing to wear their jerseys even here in the East but because of finance, the club is nowhere to be found....
all am trying to say is without a major sponsor, private clubs will die in Nigeria!
That's true. Financing a club in Nigeria football league is a very huge task considering that the league itself doesn't in any way give returns to clubs participating in the league.
Big issue. Good move. But capital intensive.
