Following their invitation to the senior national Rugby sevens team, the duo of Ikechukwu and Onyinye Onwukanjo will be the second set of brothers to feature together for the Black Stallions of Nigeria after former Black Stallion captain; David Akinluyi and his brother Emmanuel Akinluyi.
Onyinye Onwukanjo who plays for Davenport University Rugby, USA and Ike Onwukanjo of Northeast Olympic Academy also in the USA made the final Black Stallions Sevens list for the Olympics qualifiers in South Africa next weekend; 14th and 15th of November.
Speaking after his first call up, Onyinye said his elder brother, Ikechukwu, who featured for Nigeria earlier in the year during the All African Games and pre-Olympics qualifiers in Togo, made him decide to play for his fatherland when he was contacted by the federation.
In his words’, the hooker said, “It will be amazing, the chemistry will be there because he is my elder brother and we understand each other well.”
Reacting to the prospect of featuring alongside his sibling, Ikechukwu explained that both are relishing featuring together in South Africa and probably pick a ticket to 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Nigeria is drawn alongside Zimbabwe, Uganda and Zambia in Pool B and will be coached by former South Africa Rugby Sevens talisman; Fabian Juries. The team will fly out on Sunday afternoon for a one week camp in Johannesburg ahead of the Tournament.
