International friendly: Eagles battle Togo’s Hawks in Paris

The Super Eagles will on Thursday, 1st June 2017 take the pitch against the Hawks of Togo in an international friendly in Paris.

Coach Gernot Rohr is using Thursday’s game, just like last Friday’s session against Corsica Island in Ajaccio, as preparation for next weekend’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in Uyo.

The match against the Hawks will be played at the Stade Municipal de Saint Leu La Foret, Paris starting from 7pm (6pm Nigeria time).

Forward Kelechi Iheanacho, who scored from the spot to level scores (1-1) against Corsica on Friday, is one of 20 players in the Eagles’ Hyatt Regency Hotel camp in Paris, and who have been training in the French capital ahead of Thursday’s game.

Goalkeepers Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Dele Alampasu, defenders Elderson Echiejile, William Ekong, Chidozie Awaziem, Tyronne Ebuehi and Abdullahi Shehu, midfielders Wilfred Ndidi, Mikel Agu, Oghenekaro Etebo, Alhassan Ibrahim and Uche Agbo, and strikers Ahmed Musa, Stephen Odey, Victor Osimhen, Henry Onyekuru, Alex Iwobi, Olanrewaju Kayode and Sikiru Olatubosun are the others.

Thursday’s match will be the 17th clash between both West African countries at senior level, with Nigeria having won nine of the previous 16 clashes. Togo won in three, while four matches were drawn.

The first match between both countries at senior level took place on 6th October 1956. Albert Onyeanwuna (of blessed memory) scored the game’s only goal, with Nigeria’s roster also including the likes of Dan Anyiam, Sam Ibiam, Asuquo Ekpe and Cyril Asoluka. Paul ‘Wonder Boy’ Hamilton (also of blessed memory) scored the one goal in each of two friendlies in Lagos in 1966.

Nigeria’s biggest win over Togo remains the 4-2 scoreline in a 1968 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Lagos in April 1967, but Nigerians will never forget the 5-2 hiding by the Hawks in a WAFU Cup match in Abidjan in December 1983.

    El Kanemi overcome Rivers United

El Kanemi Warriors have moved to second place in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after beating Rivers United 2-1 in Maiduguri on Sunday.

Mathias Samuel and Yahuza Bala netted the decisive goals for the hosts while Onoriode Odah netted in the final minute of stoppage time for the ‘Pride of Rivers’

The big news before kick-off was that the Rivers United technical manager, Stanley Eguma had made ten changes to the side that beat FUS Rabat 1-0 four days earlier in the CAF Confederation Cup.

In the absence of so many regulars, United clearly struggled for fluency in a first half of little quality.

They however improved in the second half but Bala’s goal late on knocked the wins off their sails.

Odah’s late strike was nothing more than academic in the end as the Warriors secured vital points.

After the game, the two coaches, Ladan Bosso of El-Kanemi Warriors and Eguma of Rivers United spoke to our official website, www.riversunitedfc.com.ng. (audio files have been attached).

English Premier League outfit, Brighton & Hove Albion are said to be confident of securing a loan deal for Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham this summer.

The Seagulls may have an edge over fellow promoted side Newcastle United who have both been given permission to speak to Tammy about a loan deal ahead of the new season.

His Chelsea team mate, Fikayo Tomori joined Brighton on loan in January and helped them secure a Premier League ticket. Reports suggest that he may just have told Tammy that Brighton & Hove Albion is an ideal club to develop.

Abubakar Danlami was controversially sent off in the 76th minutes for his second bookable offense to give the host a numerical advantage.

And just as when the boys of Coach Tunde Abdulrahman were almost settled for the total victory, centre referee Daniel Katsina awarded an 88th minute spot kick as he assumed Micheal Bolaji had pushed Yaro Zakari in the box.

United's goalkeeper Ogundare Detan guessed right as he dived full length to the left but his hand could not reach Chidi Ernest's penalty.

Mukhtar Salihu was another player to test Detan in goal for United in the first half but his shot from edge of the box was well gathered by the bin pole keeper.

United's first chance came early in the 17th minute when Matthew Idoko headed Abubakar Danlami's free kick inch wide from goal.

John John also had his shot caught well by Nwobi after dribbled past two defenders in the final third.

The second half was an end to end affairs until Jerome broke the deadlock with five minutes into restart.

Kogi United had opportunities to increase their lead afterwards but the Idoko and Eghe Osas weren't lucky to bury their chances from a counter.

The pendulum of possession swung to the side of the hosts when Danlami was booked for a second bookable offense in the 76th minutes.

FC Abuja threw everything they've got at United's defense but couldn't get a way through it.

The hosts were awarded an 88th minute penalty when Bolaji was adjudged to have pushed Zakari Yaro in the box.

Substitute Chidi Ernest stepped forward and bury the chance to end the pulsating encounter on even terms.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Kogi State, Hon Arome Adoji who was in Abuja to support the team commended United players for their effort to seal their second point on the road just as he berated the call for the late penalty.

He however called for continuous focus from the team to end the season on a high.

FC Abuja's left back, Glory Adeniyi who rued his side's disappointing result noted that United gave them a difficult times throughout the match.

NPFL match day 21 preview: El-Kanemi Warriors versus Rivers United

Rivers United return to the rigours of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after their exertions in the Caf Confederation Cup.

Just four days ago, United, Nigeria’s lone survivor in CAF’s interclub competitions this year overcame 2010 CAF Confederation Cup champions, FUS Rabat 1-0 in Port Harcourt to put their campaign back on track.

They will now look to repeat similar heroics on Sunday in the NPFL when they come up against a fired-up El-Kanemi side that could go level on points with the leaders, Plateau United if they trip the ‘Pride of Rivers’ in Maiduguri.

El-Kanemi Warriors have been peerless at home this term while Rivers United have yet to win on the road in all competitions this season.

Isah Ladan Bosso, head coach of El-Kanemi Warriors is known for making wholesale changes to his squads on a game-by-game basis so it will be no real surprise if star personnel like Chibuzor Okonkwo, Lucky Erimuya, Aghahowa Otakho, Bello Kofarmata, Dele Olorundare and Isiaka Olawale are given ‘a rest’ while less stellar names take to the pitch, if the words of the experienced gaffer are to be believed.

“This is just going to be like any other match. I pray and hope I will collect three points (on Sunday).

“Our impressive home form this season is down to the fact that I have a lot of rookies in my team.

“These rookies are indigenes of Borno State; they always want to go the extra mile and give their best when they play at home.
NPFL match day 21 preview: El-Kanemi Warriors versus Rivers United

“When I go for away matches, I don’t travel with these players because they are not too exposed,” Bosso told our official website, www.riversunitedfc.com.ng

Going by recent home performances by the Warriors, Rivers United will expect an early onslaught from the young guns who are more than eager to earn a name for themselves.

The United technical manager, Azunda Stanley Eguma is expected to make wholesale changes to his squad with a tricky trip to Kampala on the horizon as they prepare to face Kampala CCA on match day three of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Eguma knows he faces a battle on his hands if he is to become the first coach to lead a side to victory over Maiduguri side at their own patch.

He acknowledges that if his side is to complete the double over the Warriors, (United won the reverse fixture 2-1 on match day one in Port Harcourt), they will have to do what no side has managed in the NPFL this season.

“They (El-Kanemi Warriors) have been impressive at home but they can be beaten because they are not invincible,” he said.

Tough-sounding words but Eguma is as experienced as they come.

Sunday’s game is guaranteed to be a fascinating watch and United will have to display grit, fighting spirit, belief and play the perfect game if they are to avoid defeat at the El-Kanemi Stadium, Maiduguri on Sunday.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah's gaffer, Yaw Preko says his target is to win when the Anambra Warriors host Kano Pillars on Sunday in a week 21 Nigeria Professional Football League tie.

The Nnewi outfit handed a shocking 3-0 home defeat to Shooting Stars last weekend but Preko believes that is in the past and his team won't get carried away as he has maintained that his focus is to secure another win against Kano Pillars on Sunday.

"We won our first away match this season in Ibadan but we aren't getting carried away by that achievement because that's now in the past," Preko told Footyalert

"We know that we still have a lot of hurdles to cross in this second round so we have to remain focus. We have prepare adequately for Sunday's match against Kano Pillars and we are positive of a great out come.

"The first meeting in Kano has gone into the history books, I really don't care about that because as far as I am concerned, we only played 45 minutes. A lot didn't go well and more so it was the first match of the season.

"We have made sure that we are prepared for what ever they come with and what matters to us most is the three points which I am sure we shall get," Preko concludes.

The Anambra Warriors sit fourth on the Nigeria Professional Football League table with 31 points from 20 games.
