Champions Nigeria will confront host nation Cameroon in the final of the 10^th Women Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Cameroon got the better of Ghana in the first semi final at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium on Tuesday, with a second half strike, and Nigeria did same against the Banyana Banyana of South Africa at the Stade Omnisports Limbe in the evening.

Top scorer at the last edition of the competition in Namibia, Desire Oparanozie scored her second of the tournament with a bullet shot from a free kick at the edge of the box, to send the Super Falcons into the final for the eighth time in the history of the competition.

Two shots by midfielder Ngozi Okobi in the first half failed to trouble the Banyana goalie, and in the 33^rdminute, Oparanozie blasted over from a free kick in a good position, when it appeared easier to open the scoring.

Kano Pillars Football Club have booked their place in the semi-finals of Gold Cup Pre-Season Tournament. 


Pillars who are Gold Cup tourney defending champion defeated Niger Tornadoes Football Club 1-0 to secure a semi-final spot. 


A resilient team effort was required from Kano Pillars to overcome enterprising Tornadoes who gained better ball possession but were shy in front of goal. 


Adamu Muhammed, 31st minutes strike ensured the Sai Masu Gida side advanced to the semi final to cap a remarkable run. 


Pillars recorded 8 points from four games, while FC Ebedei garnered 7 points from same number of games. MFM have 6 points from three matches with a decisive game at hand against Tornadoes to be played on Wednesday evening.

Nigeria National League (NNL) side Crown Football came from behind to share the spoil with the newly promoted Nigeria Professional Football League ((NPFL) side, Remo Stars Football Club at the ongoing Gold Cup Pre-season Tournament in Ijebu Ode.

Ekene Awazie opened the score sheet for the NPFL side when he converted a spot kick in the 14th minute of the game following an infringement on Awoyemi Abiodun.

Oseni Usman who was outstanding for Crown blasted in a shot in the 37th minute from out of the box to put the game on level terms.

The Sky Blue Stars who were dominant all through the first half had series of clear cut chances but they failed to utilize on them. The first 45 minutes ended in a 1-1 draw.

Champions Nigeria hit tournament newcomers Kenya 4-0 on Saturday to seal top place in Group B and reach the semi finals of the 10^th Women Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The night match at the Stade Omnisports Limbe had hardly got underway when midfielder Ngozi Okobi rocketed home from the edge of the box after a Kenyan defender headed the ball in an attempt to snuff out a Nigerian attack. That was less than three minutes on the clock.

Four minutes later, defender Faith Ikidi increased the tally with a marvelous header that sailed into the top corner of Kenyan goalkeeper Akiyi’s net.

Tournament leading scorer Asisat Oshoala blasted the ball over the bar from a good position in the Kenyan box in the 28^th minute, and Akiyi got low to scoop a shot by Halimat Ayinde in the 31^st minute as Nigeria went all out. Farncisca Ordega blasted a good Ikidi pass over the bar just before recess, and seconds later, Oshoala’s audacious lift over Akiyi’s head just missed going in.

In the second half, the Cup holders started quickly again, with Oshoala scoring her fifth of the tournament after running in with great anticipation to slot past Akiyi from an Okobi pass.

Gold Cup tourney defending champions, Kano Pillars started the tournament with a disappointing goalless draw against a 10-man FC Ebedei.


The Sai Masu Gida took the game to the Nationwide League One team but they showed their resilience as they held the former Nigeria Premier League side to a first half draw.

The second half saw a better response from both teams with Pillars creating most of the chances, but the Oliseh Boys back line was brilliant as they kept Gambo Mohammed, Amos Gyang and other players at bay.


The championship recorded its first red card after FC Ebedei's winger, Chukwurah Dubem fouled Pillars striker in a needless tackle in the 78th minute.

The Nigeria Players Union have frowned at moves made by Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs to liquidate debts owed players.

According to a notice by the Nigeria Players Union to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the body is ready to proceed to the Confederation of African Football to seek redress and clubs affected may not be allowed to register for club competitions on the continent.

Below is the notice served the NFF;

Having failed to secure any positive response from the three out of the Four Nigeria Professional Football league clubs participating in the CAF organized competitions in 2017 - namely Rangers International FC, Rivers United FC and Willki Tourist FC on their plans to liquidate debts owed players and coaches who have and are still  playing for the teams before the commencement of the 2016/2017 league season, the Nigeria players Union will now proceed to the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) for redress in line with the relevant provisions of CAF clubs licensing regulations which forbids debtor clubs and other related infractions of the club licensing regulations from registration.

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Niger Tornadoes Football Club and Nationwide League One (NLO) side, FC Ebedei of Sagamu, will be seeking a bright start to the fourth edition of Gold Cup Pre-Season Tournament when they face off in the tourney’s official opener Friday morning (8.am) at Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu Ode.

Tornadoes gaffer, Bala Abubakar, told Gold Cup media in Ijebu Ode that the team is ready and competitive ahead of the tie against the mobile Oliseh Boys.

"I'm aware FC Ebedei is a very good side, with young boys and very tricky. They have very good players so we have to be careful, but I have told my players they must be prepared to give their best. My players are determined to do the job," the merchant tactician said.

Cup holders Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by Ghana in one of the group phase matches of the ongoing 10th Women Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon on Wednesday.

The Falcons drew the first blood when Asisat Oshoala scored her fifth of the tournament in the 19th minute at the Stade Omnisports Limbe, but the Nigerians were somewhat too anxious in front of goal and missed several chances.

Ghana drew level two minutes before recess when Ugo Njoku committed a foul in the box and Elizabeth Addo made no mistake from the spot.

In the second half, the reigning champions piled much pressure on their West African counterparts, but the Black Queens were well organized at the rear and kept the scoreline even.

Enyimba International FC of Aba and Niger Tornadoes FC of Minna, have arrived Ijebu-Ode for the fourth edition of Gold Cup Pre-Season Tournament.

Cup holders Nigeria had no hesitation in spelling ‘Malian’, putting six unreplied goals past their West African counterparts in the opening match of Group B of the 10th Women Africa Cup of Nations in Limbe on Sunday.

Fleet –footed Asisat Oshoala, 2014 African Woman Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player of the last edition of the championship in Namibia, stole the giant size of the shine, scoring four of the six goals even as the Falcons hardly stepped out of first gear.

USA –based Francisca Ordega started the rout with a smart finish from Ugo Njoku’s run down the Malian defence in the 22nd minute. Before that, Oshoala’s darting run and pass in the 15th minute was fluffed by Uchechi Sunday, who wasted a number of opportunities on the day.

Four minutes after Ordega’s goal, midfielder Halimatu Ayinde came close after a good move but her chip rocked the upright with the Malian goalie beaten. Goals by Chinaza Uchendu, Joy Bokiri and Chiwendu Ihezuo steered Nigeria’s U20 girls, Falconets to a 3-1 victory over the U20 women’s team of Canada in Papua New Guinea on Wednesday.

The Canadians, who received a 5-0 hiding from Spain in their first match, went in front after only 15 minutes as Deanne Rose turned captain Ugochi Emenayo in the box and then teed up Gabrielle Carle to heave past Nigerian goalkeeper Onyinye Okeke.

Rasheedat Ajibade, captain of the Nigeria U17 girls, was a constant menace for the Canadians, and nearly got the equalizer in the 37^th minute. Eight minutes later, Uchendu brought Nigeria level when she shot past Rylee Foster from the penalty spot after Bianca St Georges handled in the box.

Dedevbo’s girls came into the second half like a house on fire, and were in front after only 40 seconds as Joy Bokiri rocketed home from close range in a goalmouth scramble.

Chiwendu Ihezuo profited from a poor clearance by goalkeeper Foster to double the advantage in the 74^thminute, meaning that the Falconets can still progress to the quarter –finals, mathematically, if they achieve a win over Spain on Sunday.

1 Moses and Etebo were class

Nigeria won but that is largely due to the performance of Victor Moses and Oghenekaro Etebo. This is not discrediting the other players but these players mentioned come in for special mention - Moses got a brace on the day but it wasn't just his goals; his willingness to come back and help the defence out when they were under attack by the Algerians shows how well he has improved under Conte.

Etebo on the other hand was excellent,
playing him as a defensive midfielder was a master stroke by Gernot Rohr as his energy, industry and passing abilities made him a constant threat in the middle especially with his assist for Nigeria's second goal. It was also hard to get past him and the one time they got past him it was no surprise that Algeria pulled a goal back.

Iheaneacho is one of the most promising youngsters in not only Nigeria but in the world and has churned out good performances for the Super Eagles. If he is to be our centre forward he needs time as it showed against Algeria and he wasn't at his best too .

Kwara State based Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL All Stars have claimed the maiden Phreestyle Sport organized AMAPRO Football League trophy with a 3-1 win over the Nigeria National League, NNL Alls Stars in the final.

The colorful grand finale played at the Kwara Football Academy, KFA pitch on Sunday saw the FC IfeanyiUbah striker, Ismaila Gata opened the scoresheet with a 22nd spot kick.
Nasarawa United attacking midfielder, Abdulkadir Aminu doubled the lead for the Premier League Stars in the 56th minutes with a screamer from 35 yards.

Crown FC talismanic winger, Ahmed Yaqub gave the NNL boys hope of coming back when he tapped in Kwara United's Segun Alebiosu's cross from close range in the 76th minutes.

But their hopes to make the final decided by penalties were dashed as ABS FC striker, Audu Akeem scored the third goal for the NPFL Stars off a wonderful team build up and claim the giant trophy.

Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr on Saturday declared that the celebrations should be put on hold as there are still more matches to play in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying race.

The Franco-German spoke at the post match press conference, after his charges dismantled Algeria’s Fennecs 3-1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

In the same pragmatic manner he reacted after the win over Zambia in Ndola last month, Rohr said: “We played a good match and got three points, but I want to say that there are more matches to play and we have to keep our focus.”

Nigeria look solid at the top of Group B with six points, with second –placed Cameroon, which Nigeria next play in August 2017, four points behind.

“We have a friendly against Egypt in Dubai in January, which will enable me to look at the home –based players, but I will continue to monitor the Europe –based players and we will see how we get matches for them on FIFA free dates.”

The win earned Rohr, who was signed on by Nigeria August this year, three wins out of three matches.

The Minna born astute football administrator disclosed to the General Coordinator of the tourney, Tunde Shamsudeen of his plan recently.

"I have been following the Gold Cup tournament, I say to you the organizers that season after season, that you have been doing a wonderful job.”

"Not only as journalist who cover the leagues, but providing a platform where teams in the various leagues in the country can come and test their players with the goal of knowing their strengths and weaknesses before the new season kicks off is commendable.”

Chairman Kano Pillars Football Club, Tukur Babangida, has told the organizers of the Gold Cup Pre-Season Tournament that he had to shun a propose Ghana tour for his team to battle Enyimba, Lobi, Niger Tornadoes others. 

Recall the Maisu Gida team were crowned winners of the Season 3 edition after they defeated Supreme Court of Abuja 2-1 in the finals.

Speaking to Gold Cup Media Team on Sunday in Lagos, "The tourney is good for all the participating teams as it would help them prepare better for the up coming Nigeria Professional Football League season in December.”

On Tuesday (November 8), it would be exactly three years after the Golden Eaglets massacre Mexico 3-0 in Abu Dhabi to lift the FIFA World Cup for the fourth time in the presence of Immediate past Governor of the state,Senator Liyel Imoke.

An impressed Governor Imoke later hosted the team on November 15 2013 inside the state's council chamber at the Governor's office in Calabar where he magnanimously pledged houses for players and officials to be located within the state's new housing estate scheme in Akpabuyo in Calabar.

The Nigeria Football Federation has explained why it decided that the U17 National Team, Golden Eaglets, participate in the forthcoming 2016 U19 Suwon Continental Cup tournament.

General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, told thenff.com on Thursday that the Federation is encouraged to sustain the team’s momentum and prepare it for bigger challenges as a result of the series of examinations done to ascertain the fact they are truly U17 players.

“Apart from the tests conducted by the NFF, there was a medical team from CAF that subjected the players to another thorough examination. We are very sure the boys are U17 players and we must do everything to prepare them for bigger challenges, as they will constitute the next U20 team.

“They showed naivity and a level of innocence in the way they approached the match in Niger Republic, and that was partly why they were intimidated out of the African qualifying series.”

The stage is set for the grand finale of this year’s men and women Federation Cup competitions, scheduled for the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Nnewi –based FC IfeanyiUbah will confront Nasarawa United of Lafia in a match of debutants in the men’s final, while League champions Rivers Angels will clash with Bayelsa Queens in the women’s final.

The women’s final is billed to start at 1.30pm, with the men’s version to begin at 3.30pm.

The Governors of Anambra, Nasarawa, Rivers and Bayelsa are expected to be at the venue, as well as host Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

On its way to the final, Nasarawa United, nicknamed Solid Miners, defeated FC Abuja 1-0 in the Round of 64, beat Go Round FC by the same margin in the Round of 32 and saw off Dynamite United also 1-0 in the Round of 16.
