Playing in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is the highest and most lucrative for players and football clubs in the Nigeria Football system and the battle to play in the NPFL takes place in the second tier league football, the Nigeria National League (NNL).
NNL Teams Battle For NPFL Slot

On the resumption of the NNL this weekend the 17th of September with 3 games to go, teams in the top half of the table will be determined to ensure they secure a spot in the NPFL while the bottom half teams will not want to relegate to the lower league.

At the start of the NNL 2015/16 Season the abridge league format was adopted to enable teams have limited number of games and also encourage a quick conclusion to the league season.

As the league draws to a conclusion the board of the Nigeria National League concludes plans to ensure the remaining games go smoothly as referees from the NPFL will be used to officiate the remaining 3 games and all games will be played simultaneously on the same day to ensure results are not delayed and most importantly to curb any sort of match fixing as the league deciding moments draws nearer.

We take a look at each group as group winning team’s gain promotion to the top elite league and the last two teams drop into the lower league.

Jigawa G' Stars VS Mighty Jets FC Hadeijia Township, Stadium
Katsina Utd VS Kogi Utd FC Karkanda Stadium, Katsina
FC Yarmalight VS Kaduna Utd Pantani Stadium, Gombe

Looking at the front runners critically Katsina United and Mighty Jets are on logger heads for the promotion ticket in this group, same points and same goal difference.

    Katsina United

Some would say win your home game against Shekarau Babes and fight hard in your away game to Mighty Jets get a result, dent their hopes in the race and wrap things up against Kogi United on the last day.

    Mighty Jets

Playing Jigawa G Stars and relegation bound Yarmalight in their games away from home. Winnable games one would say but the home tie against Katsina United looks like the most important fixture in this group and the league board needs to ensure it’s a violence free encounter.

Verdict – Hard to call Katsina United are the favorites.

This group also sees both Dream FC and Kwara United having a go at the promotion race. Both teams have well experienced managers in Dominic Iwofa the owner of Dreams and John Obuh the manager of Kwara United.

    Dreams Int FC

First up a trip to Adamawa, a home tie to Supreme Court and a trip down to Zamfara United on the last day. All game are tricky and winnable for Dreams FC, playing less relegation threatened teams makes it a winnable game but also tricky.

    Kwara United FC

Kwara United face Gombe United then travel down to Wikki Tourist and play the last game of the season at home to Taraba FC.

Verdicts- It’s going to go down to the last league matches as Dream FC might pull a shocking result in any of their games on the road.

This group is the only group with a 3points lead. Remo Stars lead second place team Unicem Rovers with 3 points and with a superior goal difference.

    Remo Stars FC

Having just on loss in 11 games and facing Abia Comets at home and a trip to relegation threatened COD United and face second placed team Unicem Rovers on the last day all looks like a done deal but first the games must be won.

    Unicem Rovers

Unicem Rovers stand a slim chance as they have to win all games against Akwa Starlet on the road, Abia Comets at home and win the all important game against Remo Stars on the last day and also beat Remo Stars FC goal difference.

Verdict – Remo Stars favorites to win the group.
