It was no doubt a tense affair as Mosan Okunola squared it out against bitter rivals Apapa Golden Stars at the prestigious Agege Stadium on Sunday. There is no love lost between these two sides as previous encounters have always been heated, dramatic and highly controversial.
Both teams locked horn as soon as the referee sounded his whistle. Tackles flew, tempers flared and emotions ran high as both teams played with a vigor found only in the best of European leagues. Apapa enjoyed large spells of dominance and found the net in the 25th minute through Atanda Quadri who coolly slotted in after a defensive mix-up.
The Mosan side quickly regrouped and started sending probing passes into the Apapa defense. It took 18 minutes for the Apapa defense to crave in as Lasisi Gafar leveled things for his side.
The Second half was an even affair with both teams evenly matched. Chances were created but both teams did a good job of squandering them.
But the game had to have its characteristic drama and controversy, Apapa left it to the final minute of regulation time before the clinched the winning goal. Aremu Ismaila scored the winner under bizarre circumstance and made safe the points 45 seconds later with his second and Apapa’s third.
This victory puts Apapa Golden Stars in pole position on the Log and is a firm statement of their desire to Clinch the trophy held by two time champions Nath Boys.
