Head Coach of Kogi United, Yomi Elijah has expressed optimism on his side's chances to gain promotion to Premier League despite 1-1 draw against Spotlight in the opening day of Nigeria National League, NNL season.
Kogi United were behind within just eight minutes of the game when Spotlight capitalized on a lose ball in the midfield and Kabir Janaidu raced down to put the ball in the net.
The Confluence State club could have leveled the score but Obinna Martins missed a spot kick for the hosts in the 36th minutes after Keffi Andrew used his hand to block Sanni Idris' goal bound shot.
The restart of the grueling encounter saw Kogi United dominating the game thanks to introduction of Ashadi Destiny and Tenimu Abubakar.
The pressure on Spotlight's defense was paid off for the Confluence State club as Babangida Chindo headed in Destiny's free kick in the 73rd minutes.
All efforts for the home side to get the winning goal proved abortive as Spotlight defended well and were lucky United attackers couldn't bury their numerous scoring chances.
Identified the major challenges and happy with his players' dominance performance, Elijah said the team will pick up in their subsequent matches and challenge for top honor in the league.
"Its unfortunate we got draw at home but its a very good thing we got it now to build so much more on our games, you can see we came, but we were so unlucky we couldn't bury our chances but I want to promise by the grace of God we are not going to drop points at home, we are not going to draw away, I'm sure and believe we will win away, the former ABS FC gaffer affirmed.
He continue "I'm confident about my boys, it happened today like that and there is no point to die over this, we are going to come and do the little correction we've noticed and by the grace of God we are going to come on top the playing will be fine and Kogi United will be on top, Elijah said.
His counterpart from Spotlight FC, Coach Bashir Sadaoki disclosed that his side was lucky to get the point against a tactically disciplined side just as he expressed hope Kogi United will be more formidable and contenders as the season wears on.
