Nigerian champion, Enugu Rangers and two time African champion, Enyimba were ranked amongst the top 50 clubs in Africa according to the latest rankings released by Football Data Base who are regarded as the #1 soccer world club ranking site on the Internet.

The rankings were released after matches played on 18 December 2016. Though seven time Nigerian champion, Enyimba didn't lift any trophy in the domestic scene in 2016 but the Aba Elephants made it the group stage of the 2016 Caf Champions League and were placed 29th best in Africa.
Enugu Rangers were crowned Nigerian Champion after a 32 years wait and were placed 38th in Africa.
