Bayelsa United Get Tough Opponent In CAF Confed Cup Play Offs

Bayelsa United, the only Nigerian club left on the continent in 2014 still have a very tough task to accomplish if the Restoration Boys want to feature in the lucrative group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.

As the draws for the play offs is set
to take place on Tuesday 1st of April 2014, CAF has given a detailed information of how the draws will take place and it looks like Bayelsa United will no doubt get a tough opponent.

According to CAF, four pots of four teams in each will be used to make the draw for the play offs which will take place at CAF headquarters.

The four pots are established by the ranking of respective sides' which is determined by the clubs' performances in continental club championships for the period 2009-2013. A pre-determined co-efficient factor is used to multiply points accrued by each club each year to arrive at the accumulated total and subsequently the ranking.

    Below is how the seeded and non seeded teams stand;
    CAF Champions League Seeded Teams-

El Ahly- 57 points- Coton Sport-21 points- AC Leopards-21 points-Sewe Sport- 10 points

    Non Seeded Teams
    AS Real de Bamako -0 point- Keizer Chiefs- 0 point-Nkana- 0 point-Horoya- 0 point

    CAF Confederation Cup Seeded Teams-
    Djoliba -14 points-CAB- 10 points-ESS- -7 points-Asec- 3 points

    Non Seeded Teams.
    Bayelsa united - 2 points-DHJ- 0 point-Medeama- 0 point-Atletico Pretroleos- 0 point

Pot A will have the top 4 ranked sides from the Champions League ( El Ahly- 57 points, Coton Sport-21 points, AC Leopards-21 points, Sewe Sport- 10 points).

Pot C containing the top ranked Confederation Cup sides. (Djoliba -14 points, CAB- 10 points, ESS- -7 points, Asec- 3 points)

Pot B and Pot D have non seeded Confederation Cup sides and non-seeded Champions League sides respectively.

That means Pot B non seeded teams in Confederation Cup
(Bayelsa united - 2 points, DHJ- 0 point, Medeama- 0 point, Atletico Pretroleos- 0 point).

Pot C non seeded teams in Champions League (AS Real de Bamako -0 point, Keizer Chiefs- 0 point, Nkana- 0 point, Horoya- 0 point)

Following placement of the teams in those respective pots, a draw will be done to determine the 4 matches to be played between the top 4 seeded teams of CL and the 4 non-seeded teams of CC. Another draw will be done to determine the matches to be played with the 4 top seeded teams of CC and the non-seeded team of CL.

That means since Bayelsa United isn't seeded, the Restoration Boys will meet anyone of El Ahly, Coton Sport, AC Leopards or Sewe Sport.

    • One ball will be drawn from pot A and one ball will be drawn from pot B
    • One ball will be drawn from pot C and one ball will be drawn from pot D
    • This procedure will be repeated 4 times (to confirm the fixtures of the play-off of the Confederations
