African champions Nigeria became the first African country to make sure of a 2014 FIFA World Cup ticket when shooting past Ethiopia 2-0 in Calabar on Saturday.

Goals by Victor Moses and Victor Obinna Nsofor completed the rout of the East Africans as the Super Eagles rather took things easy in Canaan City.

With the Eagles 2-1 winners in the away tie in Addis Ababa on October 13, the onus rested on the visitors to make the game vibrant from kick off. But his players failed to match Coach Sewnet Bishaw’s fiery semantics of days earlier when he dreamed that his boys could win 2-0, or 2-1 to take the match into penalties.

Victor Moses netted a penalty after 20 minutes to take the tie to 3-1 on aggregate, and the Eagles appeared to rest on that comfort as the tie wore on.

Ethiopia rarely threatened even as the Eagles took their feet off the pedal, and celebrations had started long before Victor Obinna Nsofor, joint top scorer in Nigeria’s 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying, cracked home a free-kick from 25 yards with 18 minutes left.

Victory confirmed Aminu Maigari’s administration as the most successful in the history of Nigeria football, with the World Cup ticket dropping into a bountiful bag that has taken in Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA U-17 World Cup triumphs this year.

The Super Eagles fly into London on Sunday, for a high-profile friendly against world champions Italy on Monday that would give the African champions a good idea of how hot the on-pitch weather would be in Brazil next year summer.
