Very few believed that Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) debutant, MFM FC can compete with top clubs in the elite league.
MFM FC haven't been pushovers playing in the lower division, they were preparing to play in the Nigeria Nationwide League 1 (third level league) in 2012 when Bolowotan FC due to lack of funds gave MFM FC a slot for free to play in the Nigeria National League (NNL).
The transition wasn't obvious as MFM FC continued from where Bolowotan FC left it and three years on the Olukoya Boys secured promotion in 2015. Through their stay in the NNL, MFM FC kept the bulk of their players and that gave them an edge. Their free flowing style attracts fans regardless of where they played and when they secured promotion in 2015, for those who have seen them played, expectations were high.
Playing in Nigeria's top flight football league demands a high level experience but can MFM FC offer that? Yes experience is very important but these rookies can be a huge success if they stay focused on and off the pitch for 38 weeks.
Picking points on the road wasn't a tough job for MFM FC as they did that consistently playing in the lower league but a major set back as to why they spent more time in the lower league is that they drop points at home most especially during the business end of the league.
For two decades, Nigeria's commercial nerve center, Lagos haven't seen top flight league football and in 2016 two clubs, Ikorodu United and MFM FC brought Premier League football to Lagos.
MFM FC announced their arrival to the NPFL with a win away at Nasarawa United FC and continued with series of amazing performances in the first half of the league but a free fall in the second stanza saw them left the 8th position to the relegation zone. And that continued till the very last day of the NPFL 2015/16 season.
Lessons should have been learnt by now but they should be prepared to allow players who get offers leave and also secure the services of quality replacement. The likes of Folarin Abayomi, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Onuwa Chukwuka, Shola Brossa, Stephen Odey, Sikiru Olatunbosun, Dele Oshobe and more may get better offers.
Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu announced his resignation immediately after MFM's 1-0 win over FC Ifeanyi Ubah on Sunday. Though the coach popularly known as Camara didn't give proper details for his decision but that may imply a bit of friction from within.
If the management of the Olukoya Boys fail to correct their mistakes and put up a plan going forward then all they have is one more season in the NPFL.
