Goalkeeper Christy Ohiaeriaku is targeting a good start to the season for Osun Babes, even if they begin the 2016/17 Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) with a trip to Nasarawa Amazons.

The Omoluabi Queens open their top tier campaign at the Lafia City Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Talented Ohiaeriaku understands the task at hand, but also believes she knows what her teammates must do in order to try to cause am upset in the capital city of Nasarawa State.

“We know when we prepare for this game that we will be behind the ball,” she told Nwfl.com.ng.

“We have to be together and when we get it we have to move fast. We want to play well and to get something, it will be difficult but we will try.

“It is the same to play them at any time of the year, you’re going to face them during the season and it will be the same [in Week 1]. We must try to earn a good result and to stay in the game.

“Currently the atmosphere here is different and that added pressure is nice, whilst we are also up against a a great team.”

Optimism is high once again going into the new season, with Ohiaeriaku notably having played well in pre-season.

“You have to forget pre-season because they are just friendlies and you don’t get any points or anything else.

“We have to focus on the League which is where you play for points and we are already doing so.

“If you are good in pre-season, you should get better in the campaign.”

Kurungu: Nasarawa Amazons have to believe

Nasarawa Amazons open their Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) campaign against Osun Babes on Wednesday.

The Lafia based team have strengthened their squad with Chioma Nwankwo, Ogochukwu Peace, Mercy Omokwo and Emenike Ijeoma.

Amazons are seeking to improve on last season's second place finish but head coach of the team Christopher "Kurungu"  Danjuma warns, "there are too many expectations around his side."

"I am clearly very happy with the players who arrived here, but at the same time I'm convinced there are too many expectations around us," the former Super Falcons head coach toldNwfl.com.ng.

"Clearly we will try to succeed with all our strength and attempt to replicate last season, but it will be a very difficult task and we're well aware of that.”

Nasarawa Amazons open their season at the Lafia City Stadium against Osun Babes.

"It is going to be a difficult game against a team that has reinforced," Kurungu.

"We are confident that we can start the campaign on a high. We want to consolidate our position over time. It's only right the fans should dream, but those of us who work in football must be realistic.

"Last season we qualified for the final and narrowly lost to Rivers Angels. We have a great squad with players who can become champions in future.

"The squad is totally concentrated on Osun Babes, as it's important for us to start on the right foot with three points."
