The Sky Blue Stars after five attempts in the Nigeria National League (NNL)  gained promotion to the elite league. The Ikene outfit were close in 2013 to securing a birth in the NPFL needing points at relegation threatened COD United but couldn't push through at the Onikan stadium, Lagos.

However in 2016 with six points clear, the team formerly known as FC Denda defeated COD United 0-2 at the Agege stadium on Saturday to move nine points clear with a match in hand.

Kunle Soname was filled with joy as he spoke to Footyalert.

"I want to say thank you to everyone who have shown support to us, it can only be God. This is after five attempts, i am really overwhelmed by the show of love from all quarters, I am more motivated to do more especially in the NPFL. Another target has just been set today

"We are very glad that finally we have gained promotion to the NPFL. We shall play in the NPFL next season and hopefully hold our own. We surely will try our best to monetize the opportunity presented by our participation in the elite league," Soname told Footyalert.
