Super Eagles (Home Base) started their campaign in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) losing by two goals to one to the Eagles of Mali.

Mali got their opener in the 18th minute courtesy of a deflection by Warri Wolves defender, Azubuike Egwuekwe after Abdoulaye Sissoko got some space at the right side in the box to shot but a final effort by Azubuike wasn't good enough.

The Malians stepped up, mounting pressure on the Super Eagles for the better part of the first half but a series of saves by Chigozie Agbim denied the Eagles of Mali to double their lead.

After the break, the Malians doubled their lead in the 50th minute, Traore made the second goal looked easy after putting ball between the legs of Agbim, Ousmane crossed from the left which Traore met to double their lead.

Five minutes later, Gbolahan Salami pulled one back for Nigeria when he rose high to score via a header from a free kick in the 55th minute. From then on, the Super Eagles piled up the pressure on the Malians seeking for an equalizer but couldn't make the most of the few chances that came their way.

Earlier, South Africa defeated Mozambique by three goals to one in the tournament opener to go top in group A. With just two matches left in the group stage, Nigeria will have to pick the maximum point against Mozambique in their next match and a tough one against host nation South Africa.
