The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has offered some interesting value to the fans this season and one of such is that win away by Ikorodu United.
Ikorodu United FC have sat at the base of the NPFL table all season long, they have dropped more points at home than any other team in the league this season yet the Oga Boys did a double over Heartland FC. Who would have believed that happening? Who got that prediction? It's unbelievable but it happened. They are now the 15th team team to win away from home this season.
The Oga Boys won the reverse fixture at the Agege stadium 3-1 and a Fatal Abdullahi's 30-yard stunner against Heartland FC in Owerri on NPFL match day 34 earned the Lagos base team its first ever win away from home in their debut season in the apex league.
Heartland's Omo Johnson had the time for a a simple tap in after a good work by Roland Koffi but the former Kano Pillars striker miscued his effort. Few minutes later, an incident occurred in the game which changed the complexion of the game; Johnson again was through on goal but goalkeeper, Fatunwase Oluwasegun quickly off his line clattered onto the striker just outside the area and got injured in the process. After a lengthy treatment, he was stretched off and taken to the hospital. Thanks to the IMO FA for swift response and Segun Fatunwase is up and running again.
Inspired perhaps by that injury, the men in blue and substitute goalkeeper Adamu Azeez grew into the game, took charge of the midfield and stifle Heartland's attacks. When crosses came into the area, Azeez dealt with them.
Atuloma's 25th minute effort and Omo Johnson's striker just after the hour mark all stopped by Ikorodu United goalkeeper, Azeez. Heartland had two more clear chances just before the interval and while Atuloma curled his effort over, Johnson failed to tap into an open goal.
Ramson Madu's words at half time seemed to inject some urgency in the hosts. Emeka Ogbugh sent in a dangerous cross into the Ikorodu area but Azeez punched clear. Roland Koffi would fail to hit home a freekick only striking the wall moment before Fatai Abdullahi fired wide at the opposite goal. It was a warning of the midfielder's ability from range but Heartland were unmoved. Two minutes later, Ikorodu were ahead, Abdullahi was offered space and time in midfield to pick his spot and he did so unerringly.
